About Us

Walton on Thames Bowling club is where generations connect, laughter echoes, and community thrives!

The Club was founded in 1922 and can be found on the Elm Grove Recreation Ground in Walton-on-Thames. Since 1937 the Club has been open to men and women bowlers and there is an extensive programme of mixed friendly matches against other Clubs, as well as many Club competitions. The Club enters teams and individuals in several Surrey leagues, Surrey County Competitions and Tournaments. The Clubhouse and Green have been progressively improved over the years, largely through the efforts of the Club Members.

Membership:
We currently have approximately 80 members of the club, including life, associate and social members. If you are interested in becoming a member or wish to find out more please contact us
Bowling Season:
Our outdoor season opens in April each year and finishes at the middle of October. Many club members also play indoor short mat in the winter months.
Matches:
The majority of our matches are played with mixed teams of mostly triples which are friendly fixtures against neighbouring clubs. We also have a number of separate midweek ladies’ and mens’ matches and we participate in 3 midweek league competitions. We organise a number of internal competitions each year, culminating with a Finals Weekend at the beginning of September.

The dress code for club matches is ‘blues’ for all matches (blue trousers and white club tops).

Matches can still continue when it is raining. Obviously very heavy rain can stop play, but, if it is not too heavy, we do often continue when the rain starts. For this eventuality we have wet-weather clothing, usually white waterproofed over tops.
Coaching:
We have qualified coaches who will give FREE coaching from 2:00 PM every Tuesday during the Bowling Season when we hold our Club Nights. Other times can be also be arranged if more convenient.
Basic Requirements:
Normally you will need a pair of flat-soled, heel-less shoes, and, of course a set of bowls. Don’t worry if you don’t wish to go to the expense of providing these for yourself until you have made up your mind whether or not bowls is for you. We can make these available for you FREE.
Facilities:
We have a pleasant clubhouse adjacent to the green, with changing facilities for men and ladies, a kitchen, and a well-stocked licensed bar.
The bar is open whenever the club itself is open, and you will find that the charges for drinks are extremely reasonable.
Club Night:
Tuesday evening is our Club Night when new members are particularly welcome. Friends and family all welcome. All ages, All abilities.
Members normally play in ad hoc roll-up games or just watch from the terrace over a chat and a drink.
The evening usually ends with a barbecue on the clubhouse terrace.
Social Activities:
We have an active social life with a Bar during Bowls matches and Club days, Short mat indoor bowls during the off season, and Bridge sessions every Tuesday morning. We also host memorable events such as Scouts Bowling, Bring a Friend Evening, Quiz nights, Open Air Music events and many more throughout the year! Book your Tickets

Playing in the Walton‑on‑Thames Bowling Club mixed triples competition has a joy all of its own, a blend of friendly rivalry, shared laughter, and that wonderfully relaxed atmosphere the club seems to create without even trying. The fun comes not just from the bowls themselves but from the little moments in between: the playful teasing after a lucky shot, the collective groan when someone sends a bowl wandering off on an adventure, and the easy camaraderie that builds as triples teams find their rhythm. It’s competitive enough to keep everyone sharp, but light‑hearted enough that the day feels more like a celebration than a contest, the perfect reminder of why community sport is such a pleasure. #Elmbridge #Waltononthames #walton #surrey #westsurrey #eastsurrey #bowlsengland #lawnbowls ... Even with the rain coming down over Walton‑on‑Thames Bowling Club, there was a real, unmistakable joy in the day, the kind that comes from shared laughter, friendly rivalry, and the simple pleasure of being out on the green together. The wet grass, the glistening bowls, and the stubborn British weather only added to the charm, turning the match into a story everyone will remember. There’s something special about leaning into the moment, embracing the drizzle, and realising that good company and a good game can brighten even the greyest skies. That’s the quiet magic of a day spent bowling in the rain. #Elmbridge #Waltononthames #walton #surrey #westsurrey #eastsurrey #bowlsengland #lawnbowls ... See MoreSee Less
