We are deeply concerned about the potential closure of Walton on Thames Bowling Club.
This club has been a cornerstone of our community located in Elm Grove Recreation ground since 1922, providing a welcoming space for people of all ages to engage in physical activity, social interaction, and community building.
Key Reasons to Keep Walton on Thames Bowling Club Open:

Community Engagement
The club fosters a sense of community and belonging, offering a place for residents to connect and build relationships.

Health and Wellbeing
Bowling is a low-impact sport that promotes physical health and mental wellbeing, especially for older adults.

Historical Significance
The club has a rich history and is an integral part of Walton on Thames’ heritage.

Inclusive Environment
It provides an inclusive environment where people of all abilities can participate and enjoy the sport.

Youth Development
The club offers opportunities for young people to learn and develop new skills, encouraging healthy lifestyles and teamwork.

A Bright Future
The club is thriving with open days and social functions throughout the year, proving what an asset of community value it really is.
We urge Elmbridge Borough Council to reconsider the decision to close Walton on Thames Bowling Club and to recognise the invaluable contributions it makes to our community. The closure of this club would be a significant loss to Walton on Thames and its residents.
We request that Elmbridge Borough Council:
- Engage in a dialogue with club members and the community to explore alternative solutions.
- Consider the long-term benefits of keeping the club open for community health and cohesion.
- Provide support to ensure the club’s sustainability and growth.
We believe that with the council’s support, Walton on Thames Bowling Club can continue to thrive and serve our community for many years to come which is more important than building on our green spaces.

I am writing to express my deep concern and heartfelt support for Walton Bowling Club during this challenging time. The club has been a cornerstone of our community for many years, providing not only a place for sport but also a vital social hub where friendships are formed and cherished memories are made.
The closure of Walton Bowling Club would be a significant loss to all of us who value the sense of community and belonging it fosters. It is more than just a place to play bowls; it is a sanctuary where people of all ages come together, share their love for the game, and support one another.
I urge you to consider the profound impact this decision will have on our community. The club offers a safe and welcoming environment that promotes physical activity, mental well-being, and social interaction. These benefits are invaluable, especially in today’s world where such communal spaces are becoming increasingly rare.
Please reconsider the decision to close Walton Bowling Club. Let us work together to find a solution that ensures its doors remain open for future generations to enjoy. Your support in preserving this cherished institution would mean the world to so many of us.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
I fully support you endeavors to keep Walton-on-Thames Bowling club going. I am aware of all the activities you run throughout the year.
I find it unbelievable that Elbridge council are not prepared to enter into a dialogue with you to find a solution that is viable and helps maintain the community relationship you have established, not to mention the marvelous membership you have.
Bowling as we know helps to maintain the health & wellbeing of individuals.
As Bowls Surrey General Secretary I speak on behalf of the county, I can assure you that you have our total support, also the support of the Governing Body Bowls England.
Walton on Thames bowls club is an important community asset and far from thinking of actively encouraging people of all ages to join. It is such an easy sport to learn and whatever your physique or age, bowls is a sport for everybody, and it will help improve fitness levels and mental wellbeing something so needed these days. It’s a gentle steady exercise and you dont have to be good at it to enjoy it. It’s an inexpensive sport to play you don’t need new kit and it’s a very sociable sport – an instant community. More and more people are discovering the club and joining. Don’t strip away community assets while at the same time building more houses and flats.
I fully support the continuation of Walton Bowls Club. The Council needs to build a new club municipal facility to include bowls BEFORE evicting the members of the Bowls Club. It would be disgraceful to close down the club without providing a replacement Bowls green and clubhouse.
The membership is increasing all the time, which proves it is a popular, healthy past time. I remember watching my grandfather play bowls there when I was a child in the 40’a/ 50’s. There is so little of the old Walton left and our historic bowls club is a great asset to the town, bowls is a sport for all ages and abilities. Walton Bowls club is a small friendly club, with a social side as well as the bowls. Even if you don’t participate in the matches, it is a lovely space to sit, relax in beautiful grounds. There is plenty of space at the Rodney Road site to build a hub, there is ample parking, also easier access than Elmgrove. Plus, Fort House surgery are only just settling in at their new surgery in Rodney Road which is far more suitable than their previous building. Let’s not concrete over anymore of this town, enough damage has been done already!
This valuable asset to the community should not be lost so many bowling clubs have close why close a thriving club used by young and old alike
It would be such a shame to lose such a valuable social amenity. The club has been established over a hundred years and constantly supported by the community with yearly subscriptions increasing. My mother uses the facilities regularly and always looks forward to attending the club not just for the bowling but the important aspect of socialising and meeting new friends. I strongly oppose any redevelopment.
While I fully support the provision of improved healthcare services in our community, I strongly oppose the idea of losing the bowling club to make way for an NHS hub. The bowling green is a valuable community asset, offering a space for recreation, physical activity, social interaction and mental wellbeing for people of all ages – particularly older residents who may have few other outlets for regular exercise and community engagement.
Once lost, such green spaces are rarely replaced. In a time where we are being encouraged to look after both our physical and mental health, removing this facility sends the wrong message. The existing NHS facilities at Rodney Road can be redeveloped. There is no need to sacrifice one essential community benefit for another.
I oppose the plans to close and replace Walton Bowling Club with a new NHS Hub or worse, more housing. The bowling club is a place which offers a valuable community service to young and old and has been a part of this community for over 100 years. Please stop tearing down our town and replacing with ugly modern buildings. The club is a place where members can interact socially and also maintain physical fitness, vital for the older community.
There are existing NHS facilities at Rodney Road and these can be redeveloped, plus that location also offers plenty of parking. Another issue for the Elmgrove/Bowling Club site is the lack of parking in an already over congested area which has suffered for many years. The surrounding roads are already at breaking point with regard to parking stress.
Please don’t let yet another Elmbridge bowls club disappear, along with numerous clubs throughout the borough, the indoor bowls club was also lost when Elmbridge leisure centre was rebuilt. The club is a lot more than a bowls club, many members live alone and the club is an important place for them to socialise and meet new friends.
I strongly believe that Walton Bowling Club need to be allowed to remain where they are or be offered alternate site within Walton.
This is such an important resource for our local community – especially our elderly. It keeps them moving, engaged and adds exercise to their daily lives keeping them fit and healthy and out of care and hospitals.
I am very much against the closure and relocation of the Walton Bowling Club.
The bowls club offer so much to the community. It should not be closed as it would affect many people’s lives
This is concerning and the closing of this club should certainly not be up for debate, I wholehartedly agree with the argument that this facility needs to remain open for members now and in the future and for the community as a whole, too many local facilities like this are threatened by greedy, power hungry local councils who struggle to grasp the concept of community!
My grandfather was a very active member of this club, as I child I have the fondest memories of being on that green and playing in the clubhouse, I hope it survives and continues to thrive so many other children get to experience the joys of this club, with their grandparents.
You have my wholehearted support. We need to keep the Bowling Club right here in the centre of Walton, where it has been for 103 years.
This council and many before them have ruined Walton over the last 30 years. Please keep Walton Bowling Club, and some of our history.
Keep Walton bowling club where it is. Don’t build on any more green space and keep amenities in the centre of Walton so they are easily accessible without a car. Bowling is a great sport for all, keeping people happy, healthy and connected as a community.
I am whole heartedly against losing Walton Bowling club and the redevelopment of Elm Grove to build housing. Elm Grove green space is our Walton family Silver and once it is gone along with the Bowling Club it is gone forever just like Elmbridge BC did with the community swimming pool on Elm Grove some years ago. Lost for ever to future generations.
Keep the bowling club where it is. Walton hospital already exists so use that for your hub. Exactly where are the doctors and nursing staff coming from? There is already a severe shortage. For many years there has been a vacancy for another doctors surgery which was called the blue practice at Walton Health centre. This has never been filled. Why spoil the fun and exercise for people that have enjoyed the bowling club activities for many years. We don’t need any more housing as there are a number of properties unoccupied.
I think the Bowls Club is a great asset in Walton and should be kept where it is. So many local assets are being lost.
Save the bowels it is a wonderful part of the community and for all involved
Walton Bowls Club must be retained! It provides sport, sociability and wellbeing for residents of all ages throughout the year, and membership is rising! It is also accessible by bus from around the area, including Weybridge and Hersham.
There is ample space on the Walton hospital site to expand NHS services.
Walton Bowls Club is a community asset, over 100 years old and is part of Walton-on-Thames heritage, so I oppose the closure of it.
Hi I’ve been bowling Walton bowling for 15year & I love i started bowling after my husband pass away it help me lot to cope with life that’s why should keep Walton bowling club for people that have lost some one & the social life is good Quiz night . ☘️🌈
Very concerned at the possible loss of this bowls club. It has a long history and is very important to the community. Bowling offers so much more than just a sport. I would like to see it saved.
Elmbridge Borough Council, surely there must be a better site for an NHS facility. The bowls club must be saved. Find somewhere for a replacement of Weybridge Walk-In to alleviate numbers attending St Peter’s A&E but not to the detriment of this essential club which is keeping an aging community fitter and healthier. I could suggest several redundant spaces. Please reconsider.
Bowls is always available all year.outdoors or indoors. Also it’s very social and good for your mental health ext.for myself it’s a life saver, gives you a purpose in life especially when you’re on your own. Bowls.People of any ability are very likely to be able too play even if they are restricted playing other sport’s.
Hi
I am a member of the Walton Bowls Club and have been for the last two years. I joined after losing three members of my family all within six months of each other. It has help me a great deal to come to terms with these losses and my fitness and mental wellbeing have improved greatly.
It is a very friendly club with a great social side as well as the bowls.
There is plenty of space at the Rodney Road site on( both sides ),Walton Hospital and the the Doctor’s Practise (Red, White & Yellow).
Please rethink about closing the Bowl’s Club and taking away more of are green space.
I would like the club to stay open for all the local residents can play. It’s important for people to have a place to go and meet other players
This Bowles club is more than just a Bowles club, it’s a social network that allows the elderly, vulnerable and lonely have someone to go and socialise so they are not just sat on their own. I have witnessed the benefits this place has for my auntie. She has developed a passion, hobby and friends through this club which she wouldn’t have if this place didn’t exist. The loss of this club would be detrimental to the socialisation, mental health and activity levels of all members and the community.
The bowling club is an asset to Walton and the community, it brings people together and gives the young and old exercise. As a member myself I have made new friends, increased my fitness and improved my quality of life. Please save our bowling club for the generations to come.
I am deeply concerned to hear about the potential closure of the Walton on Thames Bowling Club. After my Auntie’s husband died this bowling club gave her a community in her time of need and gave her purpose in her retirement. I have seen first hand the impact this club has had on many in the community and to lose it after 100 plus years would be detrimental to the Walton community. Bowles used to be perceived as a sport for senior members of society but Walton Bowles club has worked hard for many years to change this perspective and attract younger members. If the purpose of a health hub is to ease pressures on GPs, by removing sporting facilities like this it will only lead to an increase in mental health issues, isolation and an increase in physical problems due to less participation in sport. This will no doubt put further pressure on GPs. There must be another site that can be used to build this health hub that does not involve demolishing the Bowles club. I urge the Council to seriously reconsider this proposal.
As the grandchild of a devoted member, I’ve seen firsthand how important Walton-on-Thames Bowling Club is—not just for those who play, but for the community it brings together. For many, this club is more than a place to bowl—it’s a vital social hub that supports mental and physical wellbeing. It’s deeply saddening to think of it closing due to local decisions that don’t reflect the value it clearly holds for so many. I sincerely hope the council reconsiders and recognises the importance of preserving spaces like this that serve people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
I am not in your area, but have played at your club for Lime Grove New Malden. Would hate this to happen to our club. Every body is so friendly, and we are always made welcome. As someone has said it’s not all about the bowls, but the people, and the community that would miss out on this facility. Hope they can somewhere else for the hospital.
Regards
Charlie
I am 87 years of age, living within walking distance of the Walton Bowls Club. My bowling career spans more than 35 years. It is the most wonderful feeling knowing that I will be out in the fresh air playing bowls matches or just enjoying a ‘roll-up’ throughout the week.
Our Government asks that we take care of the elderly. Well bowls does that, physically, mentally and socially.
Please think about those of us who put our heart and soul into this beautiful game.
PLEASE SAVE OUR BOWLS CLUB
Do not take away a lovely community facility please
It’s extremely important to retain this club. I thought government policy these days was to encourage people to exercise and undertake activities to stimulate mental capacity. This would relieve pressure on the NHS and social services. Closing this historic and well supported bowling club is hardly in line with such policy. I for one know people who benefit from this club who would otherwise be unlikely to find any substitute physical activity or social interaction. It’s hard to believe that any councillors support the closure of such a facility. Yes, the council is short of funds and has to fulfil its quota of social housing (one way or another), but at the expense of the wellbeing of the current residents? NO.
Best wishes Walton Bowls Club with the good fight for survival as a council club. You are a thriving outward facing bowls club which is a rarity, and of great value to the local community.
This is absolutely outrageous. The elderley are NEVER at the front of anyone’s mind. Theree are very few [if any] other facilities in the area. The community centres are rarely open…what are people to do and where are they to do it ???
Physical and mental wellbeing are recognised as important in every section of thee community these days. Bowls is an excellent outlet and offers outdoor and indoor activities for anyone – not just those of a ‘certain age’.
If it is already secretly a ‘done deal’ to aquire this land for the NHS, then another site should be provided for Walton Bowling Club, which has long been a safe and sociable place for the elderly in particular. . Surely good physical and mental excercise for all will lesson the toll on the NHS in the long run. .It can only be beneficial. For goodness sake keep the well loved Bowls club – we deserve some consideration and some facilities.
This is a lovely area in which to live – very soon, if all amenities are withdrawn, it will just be an illusion.
Every year the council seem to want to build more in Walton and the town has suffered because of it. I suspect it’s all money driven. Keep the remaining green spaces we have! The club is a lovely site.
Bowls is a fantastic sport for all ages, abilities and all diverse backgrounds. This sport gets you outside which is great for health. It gives so many people company and companionship. This is great for your wellbeing.
The bowling club is a great place for young and old alike to get some low impact exercise. A haven from the hurley burley of the crazy world around us.
There are plenty of brown field sites that can be used . LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!!!
Although I do not live in Surrey, my sister-in-law lived there for MANY years so I know the town VERY well. Many happy hours spent trawling the various shops and latterly as I took up lawn bowls, and have played in Walton, it is saddening to hear of the Council’s pending decision to close the club. It is a WONDERFUL sport, not only for older people but for younger ones as well. These clubs often carry on during the Winter months with Quiz nights, lunches, etc etc in a lovely, social atmosphere. PLEASE RE-THINK THIS. Thank you. Carole Goffe-Wood III
I have played at Walton On Thames BC as a visitor for many years. I can’t stress how important it is to keep this wonderful club playing bowls on their home green. Closure would not just effect the players of this great club it would effect the whole of the bowling community of Elmbridge B.C and beyond
I fully support in keeping the Bowls Club, membership is increasing each year, it’s location is ideal and extremely accessible. This sport engages a wide age group from young to elderly. Walton needs community activities rather than becoming a concrete jungle taking up every available green space. Surely the Council should take everything into account and listen to residents views before making a decision to dispose of such an established and valuable sports venue located in the town.
Please save Walton Bowling Vlub
To hear that the council wish to close this longstanding community asset is abhorrent! How could they even consider destroying such a beautiful, well-kept, well-loved green space? It’s a part of the recreation ground, so how can it be considered acceptable to build ANYTHING on this land, NHS hub or otherwise?!
This club has been in our community for over a century, long before any of our current councillors were even on this earth, yet they seem to think it acceptable to destroy an important piece of our town’s history! And all for what? GREED.
Bowls is an inter-generational sport enjoyed the world over, and the stigma that it’s only for people of a certain age is a myth. My own children enjoy bowling in Walton with their friends and to see them outside enjoying the fresh air and sport is refreshing given the unhealthy obsession so many kids have with mobile phones and gaming today.
This town does not need another health hub, we already have a much larger health hub less than a mile from this proposed location.
What the town does need is for our beautiful green spaces to remain accessible and open for all to enjoy; places where people can come together to build friendships, enjoy sport, and keep the community spirit alive.
This club is more than just a bowling green, it’s a crucial space for physical and mental wellbeing in our community, for all age groups to come together and enjoy.
The council needs to listen to the community and do the right thing! Whoever thought it would be a good idea to destroy this community asset must really need the mental wellbeing that the bowling club can offer! Perhaps they should spend a season playing bowls and speaking to the people that love and enjoy this place; only then might they truly understand the value it brings to so many.
I fully support the members in trying to save their club
By its very nature, the Walton On Thames Bowling Club provides much needed social, physical well being and mental health benefits to the community.
Keeping open the bowling club helps keep communities alive and healthy not only in Walton but also the surrounding area
